Growing up in a school that required each junior-senior class to perform Shakespeare, I was never that big on stage plays. It was always too overacted for my taste, and dependent as I am on subtitles, the lines were impossible to keep up with.

West Side Story director Steven Spielberg says it was a conscious decision not to have English subtitles feature when the characters were speaking Spanish in the movie, as he felt like it would've been "disrespectful".

Talking exclusively with Digital Spy recently, Spielberg was asked to elaborate on the movie's lack of subtitles, and whether or not he had any studio pushback when he made it clear he wanted to omit them.
