Wondering where to buy lemon trees, orange, lime and grapefruit trees? In Los Angeles citrus is basically a black market item. Where once I could pick up a gorgeous 6' foot box orange tree for $200 now I had to scour the inland empire for one half the size at twice the price!

Now that citrus has been under quarantine (just like us except for the last 5 years!) in much of Southern California, not only is finding a good specimen a challenge but moving it without a license can come with a hefty fine.

But there is SOME good news. A number of smaller nurseries (like Boulevard Nursery in Pasadena last I checked), still carry 5 gallon citrus trees and smaller specimens in bigger pots. These can often grow FASTER than trees that start larger because their roots don't take as long as big trees to recover from planting.

We have them in many forms depending on how you want to add them to your yard. The Citrus Variety Collection frequently receives requests to purchase trees, seeds and/or budwood, particularly of uncommon varieties of citrus. Please know that due to strict quarantine restrictions, the CVC cannot distribute budwood or seeds, or sell trees at any time. However, there are alternatives available to you.

Sometimes you cannot find a tree or budwood of a variety that you are looking for. It may be rare, unusual and have less commercial demand. In this case you may have to make "Citrus Variety Introduction Inquiry" through the CCPP. The CCPP provides a safe mechanism for the introduction into California citrus varieties from any citrus-growing region of the world for research, variety improvement or use by citrus enthusiasts. This mechanism includes both disease diagnosis and pathogen elimination, followed by maintenance and distribution of true-to-type propagative material of citrus varieties.

Once you are able to obtain your HLB-negative, high quality and true-to-type citrus budwood from the Citrus Clonal Protection Program (CCPP), you will need a rootstock to graft your buds onto. There are a few options to consider:

There's a ban on bringing citrus trees into Louisiana from out-of-state sources. This is to protect our commercial citrus industry. So, you should not order citrus trees from that out-of-state nursery. Instead, check for the availability of citrus trees grafted on a dwarfing rootstock (called Flying Dragon trifoliata) at your local nursery.

If it doesn't have any, ask the owner or manager if they can check with their suppliers from the Belle Chasse area to see if they can get some. Citrus trees grafted onto dwarfing rootstock stay smaller and are especially good for containers and planting in the ground in smaller yards. Citrus trees not grafted onto a dwarfing rootstock can also be grown in containers.

CARE FOR FRUIT: Fertilize hardy fruit trees such as apple, peach, pear and plum, fruit bushes such as blackberry and blueberry and grape vines this month. Choose a general-purpose fertilizer or a fruit-tree fertilizer and follow label directions. For blueberries, use an acid-loving plant fertilizer.

All varieties are available in 5 gallon containers for $45.00. These trees are 1 to 1 1/2 years old and will produce some fruit next season. Keep in mind that first and second year citrus fruit can be poor quality and should be cut off.

While the hot summers in Inland Southern California and other similar inland Mediterranean areas can be unpleasant and may make gardening and landscaping difficult, they also ideal areas for growing sweet citrus. Learning how to purchase and place citrus trees are important for the long-term health and productivity of your citrus tree(s).

Consider your long-term landscape needs when preparing to plant citrus trees. Evaluate your available space and how your needs for that space may change over years. Plan for irrigation, soil amending or fertilizing, mulching, care during establishment, and long-term care of trees before purchasing.

Citrus can be kept small with regular, reasonably skilled pruning. Some varieties on standard rootstocks grow to 25 feet or more. Semi-dwarf trees generally grow 12 to 18 feet in height, and dwarf trees generally reach 5 to 12 feet in height. 041b061a72
